23 May Beauty in Diversity
Naturally, we build a community with people who are similar to us, those who look and speak the same as us, those who share the same culture and values. However, we do ourselves a great disservice when we don’t intentionally pursue relationships with those who are different than us–when we don’t seek out diversity.
Eleven months ago, as the start date for the associates was approaching, we knew that we would face both language and cultural barriers. Not only would we be navigating through the barriers of our culture and theirs, but also each of their own cultures with one another. We had no idea how we would begin to bridge the gaps and create a unified work place, but the answer was actually quite simple. Conversation. Through asking questions and sharing experiences our family was formed. Now, I won’t lie and say that this happened over night, all relationships take work and effort. Each day conversation became easier, each day we found out that we all had a little more in common with one another than we thought. I remember the first month in the office being very quiet, today is a completely different story, and that is a huge victory we celebrate! Laughter and chatter fills our office and the hallways, you would never know that just a year ago we were all strangers to each other. In that time, we have built a wonderful and diverse community that I’m proud to be a part of. It’s hard for me to remember what it was like before my life became intertwined with the lives of these incredible woman, and I consider that a beautiful thing.

Life is a lot better when it is enriched with diversity, just as the juice in that bottle was better once shaken.
